Alumni Battle it Out in Soccer Match!

“I have coached here at Ward since 1986 and 31 former players came home to play. What a homecoming it was! For some, it was their first opportunity to play on Dorney field. I was overwhelmed with emotion seeing these “kids”--now men and women of the Bishop Ward family, laughing and horsing around with friends not seen recently, and not forgotten,” said Bishop Ward Boys Head Soccer Coach Art Conejo.

A fun battle took place between the 20th Century alumni team coached by Steve Collins and Ron Hill and the 21st Century alumni team coached by Dan Shaver and Jim Schneweis.

“It was a great time. It wasn't just about the soccer but more so about getting together with old teammates and friends,” said Carlos Rodriguez ’89. “Getting to see some of the past and current coaches was also a highlight. I can't wait until next year and hope it continues to grow. Thanks to Art Conejo for making the entire event a success,”

“I really had a great time at the alumni soccer game! Thank you to all who had a hand in putting it together. It gave me an opportunity to see old friends and teammates, some for the first time in 25 years! I truly hope they will do it again next year and for years to come,” said Mike Kalcic ’88.

The 20th Century team scored first surprising the younger team, but Coach Shaver and Coach Schneweis made adjustments and the game was soon tied.

The game ended in a tie 2-2 leaving questions unanswered and debates between fathers and sons, and new friends made spanning both centuries. Maybe those questions can be answered in a repeat game next year?

“It was great to spend time with the people who had such a profound impact on my years at Bishop Ward,” said Ben Bartley ’93 “After playing my last soccer game over 20 years ago, it was fun to lace up the cleats with my teammates one more time. By the way…..we let the young guys tie us so they wouldn't feel bad about losing to a bunch of old dudes."

“Coach Conejo did a great job of setting the event up. It was really great to see so many former players who are still passionate about soccer. I am looking forward to next year," said Coach Schneweis.
