Bishop Ward Renames Math Competition

The math competition has been held since 1985 as a way for local Catholic middle school students to show off their skills in math while getting acquainted with Bishop Ward High School. The top 7th and 8th graders from five local Catholic schools are invited to compete for a chance to win a Bishop Ward scholarship!

Mr. Carmichael has been organizing and overseeing this competition for 25 years.

“It’s good to see the math competition is keeping the Sr. Constantia Scholarship but also honoring Joe by naming the competition.  Joe has spent many years creating a good competition for the grade schools and we’re glad he’s still able to help the Bishop Ward family by organizing and running the competition even in retirement,” said Damian Brandenburg ’96.

“Mr. Carmichael has shaped and influenced the lives of many Bishop Ward graduates. We are blessed that he continues to stay involved even after retirement. We are happy to re-name this event in order to express our deepest thanks and gratitude,” said Bishop Ward President, Father Thomas Schrader, O. Carm.

Mr. Carmichael retired in 2012 and an Endowment was set up in his name. To support the legacy of Mr. Carmichael, you can go online or mail a gift to: BWHS, Attn: Carmichael Endowment, 708 N. 18th Street, Kansas City, KS 66102.
