Theological Reflections is a unique Catholic faith-based mentoring program in it's eighth year at Bishop Ward High School. Students are matched one-on-one with a community mentor and meet once a month during the school year. Students and mentors read and reflect on the Sunday Gospel for that coming weekend , build relationships, and share life together. This is an additional opportunity for students to grow in their faith and mature into young Christian men and women.
The results have been most rewarding. One junior student writes, “He has helped me with life situations, and he has been a very good mentor and friend since freshmen year.” Another student writes: “My mentor has taught me A LOT of things. My mentor is a really great guy. He cares about me and my family. He prays for my family when they need it. Over all, I am grateful he has been my mentor.” Or still yet another, “I look forward to the days we get to meet our mentors.”
One mentor of a graduating senior writes: “We had a great visit. I expect we’ll stay in touch with each other, and we exchanged contact information to facilitate that. He’s a great kid, and this really turned into a true relationship. The time just flew by! It’s hard to believe we started when he was a freshman.”
Theological Reflection mentorship is a four-year commitment, meeting nine times each year. Mentors are expected to be faithful practicing Catholics and have an open heart to meet with teenagers. If you discern that you are called to this specific ministry opportunity, please contact Mr. John Williams at 913.371.1201. All volunteers must be Virtus trained and in compliance. Please note that mentor opportunities can be limited, depending on the year and the number of students.
